Knostrop – Yorkshire Water

Steelway designed manufactured and installed multi-flight stairs, facetted stairs to digesters, ladders, handrail to top of digesters. Also designed and manufactured support steelworks platform to limpet chamber for installation by others. All steelwork was designed manufactured to relevant Yorkshire Water standards and specifications. All our structural steel work is CE marked; all fabricated items are hot dipped galvanised after manufacture to BSEN ISO 1461 to obtain maximum product lifecycle.

Main challenges were the design and installation of the facetted stairs which needed to allow for tensioning cables running horizontally inside the walls of the digesters. This required a number of site visits for testing prior to design and installation to ascertain the position of the brackets avoiding said tensioning cables. Structural calculations and connections have been designed by our Structural Engineer and 3D models of the steelwork were created.

All our products are designed to suit laser manufacturing techniques which ensures minimum material wastage, capability for offsite modular pre-building thus reducing site installation duration and improving site safety. We value engineered the design on the free-standing stairs, considerably reducing material costs, improving the structure design and improving installation efficiency. Site specific detailed RAMS were created. The facetted stair installation comprised of working at height, the majority of which, involved using cranes and cherry pickers. With our experience and expertise and interfacing with other trades and contractors on site, the project was completed successfully.

Steelway are fully committed to site safety and the safe installation of all our products. We are accredited to the Safe Contractor scheme and are externally audited annually by Achilles UVDB, RISQS, CHAS, FORS and twice a year by the BSI in relation to our Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental accreditations. Having recently passed an audit for BSI EN ISO 45001 and are now certified replacing the old OHSAS 18001, demonstrating Steelways’ proactive approach towards Health & Safety.
