Afan WwTW

Our client was providing a sludge digester solution for the Welsh Water Alliance, at Afan WwTW near the coast at Port Talbot. Part of their scheme included two large sludge digester tanks. Our brief was to provide safe access from ground level to the top of the two 20 metre high x 18 metre diameter tanks. Steelway designed, manufactured and installed a set of cantilevered open mesh staircases, handrails and necessary landings, all to meet the Welsh Water specification.

Near the top of the two tanks, we also provided a structural platform suitable to support a 9.3 tonne sludge draw off tank. To the perimeter at the top level of both 18 metre diameter tanks, we supplied and installed triple line handrails complete with wire mesh infill panels. To the ground level of both tanks, we manufactured and installed wire mesh lockable enclosures to deter un-authorised access to the stairs.

The project required a close working relationship between ourselves and our customer, the tanks included numerous tensioning cables within their construction, we needed to ensure all fixings supporting our stairs etc. did not clash with these.

The scheme was completed on time and to the satisfaction of our client and the Welsh Water Alliance.
