For
some years Steelway have been contributing to the major turnaround in
the fortune of Chiltern Railway’s listed station at Leamington.
Various schemes sponsored by
Chiltern Railways and Network Rail have contributed to the restoration
of the mock Regency building with its Art Deco interiors and award
winning gardens.
Steelway began working at the
site some years ago with the installation of replica GWR spear top
fencing and gates. Next came the recreation of the period station name
boards with Steelway providing the substantial replica cast iron
supporting columns.
Most recently Steelway
contributed to the National Award winning (conservation section) of The
National Railway Heritage Awards with their tastefully designed
protective balustrades and specialist replication work to the listed
fireplaces together with spectacularly designed mirrors. This is not the
type of work which would normally be considered as Steelway core
business but with close scrutiny by the Steelway Heritage Team and, as
always, absolute attention to detail products were created which became
the focal point of the rooms and were duly recognised in the award
process.
Testimonial
"I recently went in to the
Leamington Spa Station waiting rooms for the first time, what a surprise
and what a joy! The elegant room beautifully decorated, parquet floor,
enormous glass light globes and uplighters, framed old railway posters
around the walls, the large healthy potted plat in the corner and the
wonderfully comfortable light oak benches – no upholstery but perfecting
shaped for comfort and lovely to look at – I could hardly believe my
eyes. My 25 minute wait went very quickly – I think I could happily and
comfortably have sate there marvelling for a couple of hours! I can
understand why waiting rooms are generally so basic and functional and
vandal-proof, but that makes the discovery of those at Leamington all
the more delightful."
