Steelway Rail – GWR Speartop fencing

Published on August 31st, 2021

For many years we have been producing quality products serving the specialist needs of Britain’s historic railway environments. One such product is the familiar GWR Speartop fencing traditionally seen on platforms and approach roads across the company’s network. Much of the original fencing is now around 120 years old but is still recognised as a typical component of the traditional railway scene.

As more and more emphasis on sensitive developments within listed environments has become the norm, we have taken the opportunity to invest in tooling and patterns to ensure that the authenticity of the products are in keeping with the original designs. To do this requires a true understanding of how the originals were produced and how certain details were achieved. This knowledge has enabled new products to follow the original aesthetic design concepts ensuring that the new fencing is convincingly incorporated.

To date, the 4’ 6” high fencing has been installed at many historic stations both on the national and private network. Now for the first time the 6’ 00” high version has been recreated on the platform at Taunton Station, a height traditionally used in goods depots and engine sheds. With due consideration to security and revenue protection, the client opted for a taller but authentic design to reflect the traditional aspects of the station.

Whilst the steel fence and gate components are protected against corrosion prior to powder coating, the cast iron gate posts are appropriately protected from oxidation using a suitable wet paint process. Authentic colours are applied and there is even an option for the application of gold leaf to the authentic replicated cast monograms to the heavy duty gates.

Examples of some of our most recent Spearhead fence projects include stations at Yatton, Penzance, Truro, Birmingham Moor St, Leamington Spa and many other historic railway stations both on the national and private network.

Whilst it is expected that these installations will remain for generations, the products are manufactured using mild steel and cast iron that is locally sourced and 100% recyclable.
