Laser Cutter helps produce bespoke steel staircase for Grand Designs House

Published on May 16th, 2018

A private house which was featured on Grand Designs and short listed as a finalist for 2016 and also short listed for RIBA house of the year, included a steel staircase which was manufactured here at Steelway. We produced stair treads that were laser cut to spell out the shipping forecast in Morse code.

2017 saw a major investment for us here at Steelway. The addition of a 3rd Laser cutting machine with integrated sheet handling system to the sum of £525,000,00 has allowed for the expansion of projects requiring intricate designs. The laser cutting machine is fully automated and allows for the creation of detailed bespoke steel fabrications.

Capable of processing 3 tonnes of steel in just 8 hours, this makes it ideal for fabrications both on private projects or larger architectural applications. We also have a 220 tonne press with bed capacity of 4 metres. This machinery gives provides the ability to turn designs into reality, creating bespoke steel staircases and balustrades to meet the vision of architects.

Staircases offer a practical solution to move between spaces, but there is no reason why these transitional spaces can’t be as beautifully designed as the rest of the building. With an array of tread, balustrade and structural components available, modern staircases can become striking architectural focal points. There are many materials to choose from but a popular option in modern architecture is steel.

There are many benefits from choosing a steel staircase as a building material; steel has an extremely high tensile strength, this makes it the perfect choice for creating key structural components such as stairs.

Manufactured staircases can be fitted with a variety of handrail and balustrade options including glass balustrades, perforated infill panels, mild steel polyester powder coated or painted finishes.
