Choosing a sustainable material for your Architectural Metalwork projects.

Published on July 11th, 2022

Design strategies have seen a shift in recent years, with the provision of healthy and sustainable environments rising to prominence for interior and exterior environments, relying on choosing eco-friendly building materials, appropriate design solutions, and creating environmentally responsible architecture and design. One such strategy is the use of Architectural Metalwork.

Architectural Metalwork has become an increasingly popular way for designers and architects to make an impact, for example adapting a simple balustrade and turning it into a focal point. Using metalwork designs to enhance a traditionally simple feature is becoming a growing trend, however, this trend also coincides with the growing importance of using sustainable materials.

Choosing materials to deliver any architectural metalwork project requires balanced consideration. The right choice is no longer dependent on the structural efficiency a material can provide, but on its ability to demonstrate its sustainability credentials beyond the life of the project. These credentials include;

  • Efficient design - Creating a design and specifying materials efficiently to minimise waste.
  • Fit for Purpose - Will it require minimal maintenance? Can it be adapted to significantly reduce its environmental impact during its lifetime?
  • Environmental Impact - Assess the cradle to grave impacts (consumption of raw resources, pollution impacts, etc).
  • Responsible Sourcing - Consider the chain of custody of the material and the environmental credentials of the product supplier.
  • Fabrication Process - How the structure will be constructed to ensure that waste is minimised.
  • End of life - Can the materials be reused/repurposed or, recycled that limit waste going to landfill.

Specifying a product that is sustainable will ensure that carbon emissions are reduced, natural resources are saved, and making a conscious effort to improve the environment.

As market leaders, we understand that appearance, durability, corrosion resistance, and cost, are just some of the other considerations that need to be considered with the decision likely to be influenced by product availability, the environmental conditions, its purpose, and your client’s budget.

Our range of Architectural Metalwork products is designed, manufactured and installed using mild steel and galvanised steel, due to its more rigorous sustainable properties than its aluminium counterparts.

Steel can withstand more force making it stronger than aluminium, making it more durable which would reduce the need for replacements and associate impact on the environment. With up to 70% of steel alloy made from recycled material, It can also be easily recycled without a loss of quality making it a more sustainable option.

How Can We Help?

At Steelway, all of our architectural metalwork is designed to:

  • Comply with planning consent and building regulations
  • All relevant British Standards & loadings

Site surveys and technical visits can also be carried out if required as well as the complete design, fabrication and installation service.

Due to our vast experience in the construction industry, we can offer a wide range of products in a variety of materials. Material options include stainless steel and mild steel.
