PICCADILLY LINE
Steelway’s expertise in metal bracketry and staircase construction has been used to good effect on the Piccadilly Line extension to Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 complex. This included escape walkways, passenger escape stairs, specialist brackets, Fireman Escape Stairs and a passenger fire escape staircase.

The project involved work to both the tunnels, escape and access staircases under the terminal. This included detailed multi functional and adjustable brackets to ensure correct alignment of the walkways in relation to the track. These specialist brackets were an integral part of the specification to compensate for the build tolerances along the full length of the 4 kilometre track.

Another key element of the project was the design, supply and installation of the passenger escape stairs and fireman access stairs beneath the terminal. These were designed as modules and clad in specialist fire resistant cladding. The modules weighing some 30 tonnes where transported at night across the runways and craned into position. The total project costs amounted to 2 million pounds.
